How To Install a Butcher Block Countertop

Butcher blocks have the unique feature of being trendy and chic while also being functional...not to mention are relatively inexpensive! Here, then, is our step-by-step list on how to install a butcher block countertop into your new kitchen!

You have the option of leaving the countertop edges straight (if it’s going onto a regular countertop) or curved (if it’s going onto an island).
Many wood manufacturers will measure the countertop – and, by default, the amount of butcher block you need – for you, often at little to no cost. However, even if there is a cost attached to the measurement, it’s best to get it done professionally so you have all the material you need (as opposed to doing it yourself, where you risk being short of material).
Make sure to make an enlarged hole around each of the screws. Butcher blocks tend to expand and contract with humidity, so you will want to make sure there’s a way to account for that.
If you’re installing the butcher block where a sink is, make sure you cut an appropriately-sized hole for the sink.
One of the easiest ways to make sure you have enough butcher block for your countertop is to do a cardboard “demo” of your proposed butcher block countertop. In that way, you can measure to make sure you have enough material, and have an idea on how you’re going to install the butcher block countertop as well.

We all know, by now, that front doors add value to your home...in fact, a properly maintained front door can add almost double the value to your home!

With the holidays just around the corner, we’ve come up with some great ideas for decorating your front door. Instead of a boring old wreath, try these on for size!

Freshen up the front door with a coat of high-gloss, oil-based paint in a bold color (like red or hunter green).
Add some outdoor pendant lamps to complete the look brought upon by the fresh coat of paint.
Don’t forget about your foyer when you’re freshening up the front door. You don’t even need to do much – a well-placed chandelier is really all you need for a polished, welcoming look!
Consider accenting the already-existing trim work in the door. For example, if the door has a border, paint that border a different, lighter color than the rest of the door so it stands out. Or, in the alternative, consider painting the door frame a contrasting color to the door.
Replace your fiberglass door with a wood one. A properly stained & sealed wood door will last much longer, and bring more value to your home, than a fiberglass door.
If the exterior of your home permits it, add columns to add to the drama of the door.

How to Make a Rug into a Headboard

Being green doesn’t mean just using sustainable materials in your home – being green also means that you re-use some old materials to prevent landfill & decrease a carbon footprint! In today’s post, we’re going to talk about how to make an old area rug into a headboard.

Here are our tips and tricks:

Have a lumber store cut enough wood to create the headboard that fits your bed – a queen sized bed, for example, will need a different headboard size than a California king sized bed.
Measure the rug to make sure you have enough material, regardless of the size of the headboard.
Buttress the corners of the frame with brackets to prevent it from falling apart (and onto your head – ouch!)
Paint the edges of the wood frame in the same main color as the rug. For example, if the main color of the rug is black, then the wood frame should be painted black.
When you fasten the rug to the frame, make sure you use rug nails, which are specifically designed to hold rugs into place.
To that end, too, you need to secure the frame to the wall with strong nails, and buttress it with metal brackets. When securing the frame to the wall, make sure you place the bracket into a stud in the wall, not in the drywall.
Finally, use a level to make sure that the frame is aligned properly.
