Nothing detracts from your home like dingy, outdated surfaces, and they’re often the easiest and most budget-friendly items to modernize, whether it’s remodeling kitchen countertops in Deltona, FL, or a complete bathroom remodel in Orange Beach.

All it takes is a little creativity, some resourcefulness and a steady hand, and you’ll be on your way to the kitchen or bathroom remodel of your dreams.

David Waller Interiors who, for decades, has been a leader in interior design in the Port Orange, FL area, has some tips for upgrading your counters.Replace or Remodel?

The first thing you need to do is assess your current kitchen. Countertops typically revolve around the appliances, so, say, if you’re also getting a new range with measurements different from the standard 30-inch width, or if you want more storage, it may make sense to replace it completely.  Also consider your present floor plan, traffic flow and whether or not you’re changing the cabinet configuration, because it can affect whether or not the existing placement works.

If none of these are an issue,  and if the countertop is basically still in good condition, then there’s no need to spend the extra money on replacing them.

● Paint it.  This is probably the least expensive way to go, and it’s best on wood, linoleum or flat laminate countertops.  First, sand it lightly, either by hand or a pad sander.  Make sure it’s a light grit; you just want to sand it enough so the primer and paint will stick, but you don’t want to cause scratches.

● Cover them.  You can use wood, metal, fabric, paper, or tile. You can update your countertops with just about anything, but a good rule of thumb to ask yourself is:  “Will this material be able to stand up to daily use, or “can it take heat” or “is it waterproof?” Tile can be laid on top of most counter surfaces; if your existing countertops already have tile, you could paint them. Nevertheless, beware, it’s pretty tedious work!
