There's no getting around it, a kitchen or bath remodel is really going to disrupt your life. Your kitchen is going to be out of commission during the work, your bathroom is on lockdown, and there are people and noise everywhere. As much of an inconvenience that all is, there's no reason the process should be harder than it needs to be.
So, David Waller Interiors thought it might be a good idea to offer our customers some suggestions to help them take some of the sting out of their interior design D-Day, and help get them ready to storm the beaches. Here are 3 ways you can take the edge off of the whole affair:
1. Be Honest with Yourself and Your Contractor about Your Budget
One of the most important aspects of your remodeling project is, without a doubt, your budget. Basically, everything from materials to labor depends upon it, and it's important that you know what you are working with, and properly convey that knowledge to your contractor, so he can coordinate his end effectively.
It's always best to be as open with your contractor about your budget, as you are about your wishes. Any good contractor who has a clear idea of what you want and how much you have, should have no problem offering solutions that fall within the parameters of both your budget and your desires.
2. Don't Cut Corners When Hiring a Contractor
A good contractor is worth their weight in gold and a bad one is worth their weight in trouble. It's important to ensure that you are working with seasoned professionals. The best way to weed out the bad guys is to verify that anyone you are thinking of hiring is licensed, insured, and is covered by worker's compensation insurance.
This will go a long way toward avoiding the headaches and legal issues that could occur in the event of a botched job or worksite injury, and shows that the contractor is at least a recognized professional operator.
3. Batten Down the Hatches!
No matter what, you're going to have your life disrupted throughout the project, so it's best to prepare yourself ahead of time. Just remind yourself that as soon as all the noise, hassle, and lack of access to your vital rooms is over, you will have a beautiful new kitchen or bath that will make it all worth it.
