The first thing you will need is a clear plan of action with a set or priorities, a schedule, and a budget. Bathroom remodeling is one of the fastest ways to update your home, and it can range anywhere from replacing the cabinets (often referred to as the "medicine chest" in this room) to total demolition.

Here are some tips from David Waller Interiors who, for over 47 years, has been a leader in design.

The right way to select a bathroom vanity

Size and proportion are the most important factors when it comes to vanities, so accurate measuring is a must; you might even want to use some painter's tape to be sure you're meticulous. Make sure you have enough clearance to open doors, shower stalls, etc. You'll also have to think about sinks; they include drop-down, under-mount, and vessel bowls.  There's even an integrated one so there is one continuous line between the bowl and the rest of the vanity.

Just like in the kitchen, a bathroom countertop sets the tone of the entire room.  For example, granite gives a sense of luxury of a 5-star hotel bath; marble is classic and elegant; tile can be vibrant and fun with some colorful pieces.

If you're looking for budget-friendly, the answer lies in laminate or vinyl.  They both come in so many colors, patterns, and designs, with even wood and stone looks, so there's something for everyone.

When choosing bathroom cabinets

Be sure to define your style.  Bathrooms today don't have to match the overall design of the home (thankfully!).  Do you want it to be a spa-like atmosphere, country French, sleek and modern, a mountain cabin, or something else? Decide on your color scheme and desired finishes.

Remember that the primary function of the cabinet is to store items and hide plumbing, so be sure whatever you choose has adequate space.

Also, consider bathroom flooring.  It should coordinate with the rest of the room; for example, a marble (or marble-look tile) floor goes very well with a spa-like atmosphere, while you might also want the look of wood with tile.
